Hello Dolphin Explorer teachers and students, This blog was created just for YOU as a way to communicate, talk about the lessons and ask questions. I hope you find it useful. I'll be posting blog challenges, updates and "breaking news" photos or videos during the Program.

This blog is fantastic! I look forward to sharing this with my students and connecting with other teachers! My students and I are very excited to begin the session! Susan
So excited to be working on the program with you! Letters informing parents of our involvement were sent home yesterday. My students are counting down to March 5th! Happy Valentine's Day Dolphin Explorer Team!! Susan
Just saw your post! I made a page on my website to get everyone excited about the Dolphin Project- but a letter is a better idea! We are looking forward to it too. Where are you located, and what grade level are your students? We are on Long Island and we are doing it with our 6th grade science classes. Stacey :)
I am from Pittsburgh, PA and I teach reading. Students that will be participating this session are in second and fourth grade. The program motivates my students to read non-fiction books and complete research reports. It is amazing how much fun reading and writing becomes when it is aligned to this program! If you would like to see my letter I would be happy to send you a copy of it via email. Just let me know.
Thanks for a great first week! The kids are having fun already and I can't wait to get them into their extended reading and writing activities. Following our word building lesson today students will be responding on your blog. Rigor and relevance!!! Susan
I just found a great video on "teaching channel.org". The lesson is titled, "Simulating an Oil Spill to Understand Environmental Impact". The teacher's name is Alicia Barrones and teaches fourth grade. If you google the site and the name of the lesson you should be able to locate it. I love how the teacher incorporated reading, writing and a science experiment to allow students to realize the impact of an oil spill. I will be looking into trying this out with my fourth graders.
One of my second grade students brought in a picture book today titled "Dolphin's First Day" by Kathleen Weidner Zoehfeld. Great story about YOY's that includes facts that James discusses in his lesson.
For anyone interested in creating vocabulary flash cards I found a free site, lakeshorelearning.com. Once at their site, click on "free resources" and you will find the link for flashcards. It is allowing me to create printable vocabulary cards for the students. Very easy and you do not need to create an account. Susan
Created new flashcards on Quizlet.com for the following lessons: Anatomy, Feeding Techniques, Crabs and Habitats (Mangroves). My students enjoy the scatter game and are doing a great job retaining the new vocabulary. Hope others will find them useful. Have a great weekend. Looking forward to Tuesday's session! Susan
Hello from Corkscrew Elementary School. We are just beginning our adventures with the Dolphin Project. Have there been new births this 2013 season? Who are the new mothers and how do you choose the names of the new baby dophins? Thank you, Mrs. Kolmann
Mrs. Kolmann! I apologize that this post slipped through my sight!!!! I hope your group had a great last day celebrating with their Dolphin Explorer patches! We have about 5 YOYs swimming about right now, it is possible we will have a few more! The names are chosen by the people on the Eco-tour at the time of the sighting and also our schools in the Program so we can definitely get a dolphin named from your school in the future! :)
